What are spot electricity prices?

Spot electricity prices are current market prices that change every 15 minutes based on supply and demand on the OTE energy exchange. Unlike fixed tariffs where you pay the same rate, spot prices reflect the actual value of electricity at any given moment.

When are prices lowest? - At night (typically 2:00-5:00 AM) - On weekends and holidays - During high renewable energy production (solar, wind) - Sometimes even negative - you get paid to consume!

When are prices highest? - Morning (7:00-9:00 AM) and evening (5:00-8:00 PM) - In winter months with high demand - During production capacity shortages

Frequently Asked Questions about Spot Prices

What does 'at spot prices' mean?
'At spot prices' means you pay the current market price of electricity from the energy exchange. The name ZAspot is derived from this principle - charging AT SPOT prices (in Czech: ZA SPOTové ceny).
Are spot prices always better than fixed tariffs?
In most cases yes, if you charge during low-price periods (night, weekends). On average, customers save 20-40% compared to fixed tariffs. Exceptions may occur during extreme market situations.
How often do spot prices change?
Spot prices change every 15 minutes. OTE publishes 96 price slots per day (24 hours × 4) for the next day around 2:30 PM.
Where can I find tomorrow's spot prices?
Next-day prices are published daily around 2:30 PM on the OTE website and here at ZAspot. You can plan your charging in advance.
Can spot prices be negative?
Yes! When there's an electricity surplus (e.g., lots of sun and wind), prices can go negative. At that point, you'd theoretically get paid to consume electricity.
Why are you called ZAspot?
The name ZAspot is short for 'ZA SPOTové ceny' (Czech for 'at spot prices'). Our mission is to enable EV charging at fair, transparent spot electricity prices.
